The genus Felis is currently considered to consist of six living species, although the domestic cat and Chinese mountain cat are sometimes considered subspecies of F. silvestris. Hiện nay chi Mèo được cho là bao hàm 6 loài còn sống, mặc dù một số ý kiến cho rằng mèo nhà và mèo núi Trung Hoa được xem là hai phân loài của mèo rừng F. silvestris.
